Last week I attended Google seminar for half day. I have heard before about people being amazed by Google internal politics. And I just loved their office! It’s not easy to get employed for Google, but when you actually get in you can travel (and still get job), get free chocolates, crisps and sandwiches all day. You can take shower, play snooker or build a tent in office. It’s all about creativity. I loved colors and comfort everywhere. Gordon House on Barrow Street is Google EU head office for 44 countries.

Look at some photos here:

Here is some summary from presentation and workshops.

Statistics:

  • 59% people purchase products online because of brand
  • 57% people search for brand after hearing link on TV ads
  • 80% internet users have broadband in Ireland
  • 70% households has computer in Ireland
  • Internet usage : 1.2 billions people using through PC; 3+ billions people using through mobile
  • 121.5% people in Ireland has mobile phone

Free Google Tools:

  • Google Webmasters – all about Google generic search and how get in top of it
  • Google Insights – check keywords, keyword seasonality, increasing brands online (e.g. your competitors)
  • Google Analytics – easy setup tool for seeing your website statistics (e.g. visits, page view, visit time). I learned few new things about Goals and Funnels. Setup goals – what you want users to do on your site. Setup Funnels – what path user should go through.
  • Google Website Optimiser – it is possible to show two website versions at the same time and analyse design.
  • Google UK Online Ad Toolkit – UK case studies for keywords specific to market. Great source if you are searching keywords for your website.
  • Google Adwords Conversation Tracking – if you want to follow people from keyword search till goal on your website, this is tool for you.

Tips for your homepage:

  • Landing page should show what you want users to do on site
  • People scan webpages not read them. They start with left top corner so make sure your most relevant information is right there.
  • Give people options how to contact you
  • Don’t make people to fill massive forms.
  • Don’t use flash on websites as it won’t show on most of the mobile phones.
  • Speak people language (don’t speak to technical)
  • Create competitor alerts in Google

IIA Congress was great success this year with speakers such as Google, Facebook, Realex Payments and dotMobi. Each of us could learn something and do quite a nice networking meanwhile.

See all the presentations here

See all photos are here. There was even one photo of me (in red).

Unfortunately I didn’t went to awards ceremony, but everyone told me that it was very nice. Hopefully someone else will blog about it.

Small review of presentations:

  1. Interesting news from IIA: there will be IIA board elections in August this year. This was first time I heard about it and I would like to know more
  2. Realex payments presentation was all about how to understand what is winning in your business. How to find it and how to implement it. Realex called it F5 (refresh) strategy. Also they told us about new website that has been launched together with IIEA, EI and ISA – check it out www.alliance.ie . This website will help scale up Irish websites.
  3. dotMobi told us quite interesting facts. There are 3.5+ billion people now using internet and there will be 1 more billion joining soon. But this billion will be joining through mobile phones what completely changes our web strategy. If we look at our websites now on mobile phones they do look crap (check yours on http://ready.mobi). Maybe it is worth to invest in .mobi domain and ensure your website shows correctly on all mobile devices
  4. Google concentrated on their 3 tools to improve your website traffic – Google Analytics, Website Optimiser and Conversion Tracking. All three are free but so far I was using only first one (didn’t know there were others). And of course best example of SEO online is Obama campaign – it comes up in every SEO related event.
  5. Nobody needs explanation what Facebook is, but still quite a few people are unsure what benefits it can give to them. So lets see statistics Facebook provided us with. There are 200 million users interacting with Facebook every 30 days from which around 70% is outside US. Average user spends around 25 minutes on the site, does around 2 visits per day and 50% of users return to Facebook daily. Advertising on the Facebook is growing surprisingly because it can target just the right people (age, gender, country etc). If you don’t have company site on the Facebook (and I don’t have one) you should setup one up. I also really liked their video about how they translated Facebook in all possible languages. I couldn’t find it over Google so I hope someone who reads my blog can point me in right direction.

Workshops (I attended only 3 from 6 because of time limit)

Using Video to Boost Your Search Rankings

So how hard is it boos your video? What do you need?

  1. Equipment. Digital cameras isn’t so expensive any more so buy the best one you can afford.
  2. Setup YouTube Channel – can be done in few min
  3. Transferring video from camera to computer. You might need some program for this to convert it to the right format to edit. Presenters used AVS Video Converter
  4. Edit. Optimal video length is 3-5 min. Make it interesting / entertaining / informative. Keep just one clear message. Put link to your website or e-mail at the end of video. Be sure to use licensed music or you might be sued.
  5. Put on YouTube. Max length of YouTube video is 10min.
  6. Optimise keywords and tags. Proper tagging is one of the most important things of the whole process. Without it there is no point putting video online. “how to” category is most searched over web.
  7. Put it on your website
  8. Use TubeMogul to distribute your video over other sites

Reduce Costs, Increase Revenues with Effective eBusiness

This workshop was presented by 3 companies – Realex Payments, jenerate.com and Ringjohn.

Effective eBusiness is achieved by:

  • eMarketing – try different site versions – design wise and keyword wise. Check the one best working for you.
  • eCRM – automate your sales process, manage campaigns and decide do you really target correctly. Few CRM’s mentioned during meeting was – salesforce.com and Soho
  • eCommerce – commercial sites should be easy to use, they have to have consistent price and they need to decrease administration costs. Jonathan Forde from Realex mentioned that currently one of the commercial solutions that is growing rapidly is Magneto.

Leverage Your Networks to Save Money

While I haven’t been using Microsoft solutions for few years, it is always interesting to hear what’s new out there. Microsoft is very powerful in Ireland – about half web development projects is written in .NET.

There is new cloud system coming out – Windows Azure that will include Windows Live, Microsoft Dynamic CRM Services, .NET, SQL Server and Share Point Services. Prices aren’t still worked out but they might be different what we are paying for Amazon Services now. Toolkit can be downloaded already and Beta will be available in few months. This is great solution for start ups who want to try out their idea and don’t want to buy expensive servers, but still get 99.9% uptime.

Meetball (2nd day event)

It might be because of rainy weather and the IIA Net Visionary Awards in previous day late evening that attendance for this event was quite small. It seemed to me that there were more presenters than listeners. But from other point of view – it was very good for networking as it was more intimate and you could talk with everyone in room.

Few more things to note about event

Realex payments was main sponsor this year. Their logo was everywhere, but what really caught such a chocoholic as me was free chocolate. I could get free chocolate this year from Realex payments, IQ Content and independent.ie . There was few more gifts such as USB from elucidate, T-shirt and voucher for 150k (won by Fiona) from Realex Payments and few iPhone lotteries from FBD and iedr.ie

Event place and surrounding was quite nice but it was way too far at the Dublin North. It was trouble to get to the events both days as they were starting at 8.30 am. I was very tired after second day.

Seems topic Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) wasn’t as popular as previous ones at Dublin ALT.NET so there was only 15 people attending. Only 1 person in room had experience with it and few others have heard about it. It seemed pretty complicated and was hard to get my head around it.

Following paragraph is my summary of what I understood from the evening. Please correct me if I’m wrong at some points.

As I understood ESB is message layer that communicates between components within enterprise system. There are asynchronous ESB listening processes that handle each message request and distribute them. It is good for scaling, but ESB integration needs big money investment, constant monitoring and it has large learning curve. This is one of the reasons it’s not usually implemented in small systems / small organisations.

You can read more about ESB at Wikipedia or buy a book about it

Yet another successful evening in HerbStreet restaurant with other girls that are in the technology. Food was great and there was a lot of discussions going around why women has such a hard time to achieve something in IT career. Apparently it is our nature – being more social and not so geeky. We don’t go after “win or loss” strategy and that brings us down in corporate environment. But we do success better as business owners, because it’s all about socialising with people.

We got great talk from Amanda Scott about success in our careers. Here is questions Amanda presented to us. Try out them yourselves to understand better where you wanna go in your future.
1) Who is your role model? And is your parents close to that or they are completely different?
2) Where you wanna be in next 10 years time in your life?
(Most of the us wanted to be career, money and travel independent.)
3) What you have to do to get closer to your dream?
3) What is the next step you have to do in next 18 months to get closer to your dream?

I got recommendation for book to read – “Difficult Conversations”. It could help you if you want to get better salary, change something in your work or just in your life.

And I was completely amazed by vacuum cleaner robots Martha presented us with. I want one! Apparently YouTube is full with such Roombas + cats driving on them. My cat would definitely love that thing.

Saturday I went to OSSBarCamp and apparently Girl Geek Day was in the same building. I didn’t stay for a long though, but I got insight of both of them.

I would argue that OSSBarCamp was really bar camp. In real Bar Camp sessions are proposed and scheduled by attendees, mostly on-site, typically using white boards or paper taped to the wall. Most of the talks was scheduled beforehand and there wasn’t much discussions what people want to hear. If we say it was conference then it was presented marvellous. Thanks to Jaime and Laura for organising it.

I heard 2 great talks in OSSBarCamp. First talk was about introduction to Ubuntu. I’m not really familiar with it so it was interesting to listen to it. Second talk I went to (there was 3 parallel talks all the time) was about green party’s IT policy. We got to the few suggestions on how make people use it and implement it in practise. Great way to actually impact what will be going on in IT world in future. Can’t wait to see real policy, which will be created in next few months.

Girl Geek Day was organised by Laura and supported by Martha Rotter from Microsoft. We got really nice dinner from Celtic kitchen and talked about different difficulties what women get working in IT. Girl geeks are minority in IT so we work harder and it’s difficult to achieve things. And sometimes we do feel lonely because people don’t take us serious.

I had to run away so I didn’t stay for the rest (drinks afterwards and few more talks), however I did enjoy it. All photos taken by my camera are blurry again (I really should buy new camera), so no photos this time.

Update – got photos from Girl Geek Day

You can see a lot of information on web about recession and how to fight with it. Yesterdays Business Advice Show supported by Bank of Ireland was everything about stopping to look down (because of recession) and start to do something with your business. I completely agree with everyone who said that January was the biggest peak of recession. People was so afraid that they actually didn’t even went out of their offices. It started to pick up on February and I’m amazed how much people actually attended this event.

The Enterprise BusI therefor regret a lot that I didn’t came there with my stand. So much people starting their own businesses and expanding them – they would need to do something with web. They would have some great ideas of expending over it. Well, I was rather unfortunate to not thinking through this beforehand.

Event was part of the Enterprise week and as most of them took part in Stillorgan Park Hotel. My benefit from the event:

  • 21 business cards, 2 leads, 10 existing contacts
  • 2 free tickets on business coaching event next week
  • Information about:
    • Patent search & registration
    • Selling Services in Northern Ireland
    • SFA, IIA, ISME, Enterprise Boards joining, networking, events
    • Investment for Redundant people who are starting business
    • Business Coaches
    • Translations
    • Online Banking (event was organised by BoI)
    • Solicitors, Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement
    • Franchising
    • Accounting software
    • Brochures about Managing Business Finances from Enterprise boards & ROS
    • Brochure about Marketing business

We heard great presentations from both Krishna De (marketing specialist) and Gavin Duffy (from “Dragons Den”) about actually starting to do something not just feeling depressing.

Krishna De presentation

Have you heard of Harry Potter site launching before? I keep hearing it on every networking event related to marketing. It seems that it was such a great success that people keep babbling about it. The marketing person of the site decided to tell only 7 people about site they are going to launch. Those 7 people were a big influencers in their area. They were all invited on the website on midnight for a talk. It made World Wide Rave after. Everyone blogged about it and they got enormous popularity in very short time and with a low cost budget.

So how do we find our customers in this recession scenario? First we talk with our existing / old customers and ask what they have been going through. What are those decisions they have to make now? Creating survey over Google Docs doesn’t cost us anything. Why not to see what our customers are doing? Second we look at your concurrents and analyse how they are trying to target customers.

After creating marketing plan you have to do it. Every day think – what have I done today for my business marketing? And even if it is small step, it will move forward your plan.

Think about how to make marketing more engaging. How to get people come back to you? Promising them free quote, documents or prizes? Make your site interactive. Make your business card interactive. Make people talk about you and keep in touch with them.

Gavin Duffys presentation

He was one of the “Dragon’s Den” dragons, so he kept talking about business, but it was so funny. For example, he talked about applications that didn’t went through. One farmer called them and said that he invented rat catcher, because you are always about 3m from some rat. And those rats, they have electrical charge, so when you take them in hand you can be hit by electricity. The “rat catcher” was actually a land mine. Dogs and cats can walk over it, humans can walk over it and there isn’t a problem. But if rat go over it, it goes boom. Hilarious.

Recession is father of innovation. For those who live through recession are more likely to grow multinational that those who don’t. However, setting up business might be very, very lonely. You are alone with all those problems which you have no clue how to solve. This is where enterprise boards and networking is a great help for everyone starting up.

Apparently “Dragon’s Den” might start second season from September or October. So if you are interested go online and try to apply for it. And remember – that investors do not invest in business, they invest on people.

Awards

BoI together with enterprise boards were giving away 5000eur in cash and 5000eur in mentoring & training to one of the applications for Bright Ideas Challenge. There were 4 of them. Each had great idea, very nice business plan and future growth planned.

  • Asimil8 is an e-learning venture that provides immerse education for languages and other subjects through virtual world and gaming technology. I was amazed by they idea. It might be quite similar to the MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft but with learning purposes
  • iFoods owns and operates the website lookandtaste.com. The website features over 230 professionally produced video recipes raging from scrambled eggs to the daunting soufflé. I actually have to check that website out. It looked very tasty.
  • Trezur is an online music recommendations service. It provides listeners with a widely distributed mechanism to find new music. Its recommendation engine combines the best of people-generated and automated musicology analysis to provide listeners with relevant recommendations
  • Vellocity Couriers provides an environmentally friendly bicycle courier service within Dublin’s city center. Using specially designed cargo bikes, it carries small to medium loads more quickly, cheaply and with no emissions.

Asimil8 won the first prize, but I didn’t got enough time to take picture. Congratulations!

Would I go to this event next year? Definitely, with my own stand!

It wasn’t very wise to assume that I could see parade by just going there at 12 o’clock and looking at it. People from all over the world came to see this parade. It was completely CROWDED. We kept going around the streets hoping to get a peek at parade, but at the end we just gave up. To see the parade you have to do one of the following 1. Be there few hours earlier and take place near fences. Don’t move or somebody else will take your place. It might be hot if it’s sunny or it might be cold if its rainy so be prepared. 2. Take stairs with you. It is very common thing on St.Patricks and a lot of people do take stairs with them. 3. Climb somewhere high – on statues, telephone boxes, staircases of the old buildings, fences, poles, fountains etc. 4. Buy ticket for the best view (not sure about this though).

As we didn’t see parade we decided at least go to the Merrion Square for the Fun Fair. It was crowded as well, we were standing around 20 min to get on the panorama wheel and then we just gave up and went home. Probably I won’t go to parade next year and it is a bit sad, because it is great (saw it last year, because it was a bit rainy and there was a little less people). They should get this thing somehow better organised or it looses it’s credibility.

Here is some photos.
