Two days ago I received DM on twitter from one of my followers to join their Mafia family. I have seen this application over facebook and it seemed interesting. When second person DM me over twitter that I should join their “mafia family” I actually went and joined. Game itself is very lame. You click to do job, click to get respect points, but there is nothing interactive really. After 10 min playing, I returned back to work.
I was very, very surprised that I started to get DM and replies from my followers that everything I did on game was posted on my twitter feed. I was spamming all my followers with posts like :
“@gita_m has just done a job in Drug Deal in #MobsterWorld http://bit.ly/A9N4Yabout 20 hours ago from Mobster World”
And this feed was really, really long… So then I decided not to play this game any more.
Today I received DM from few people saying that this Mobster World is direct messaging all my contacts and asking them to join my Mafia family. I went into MobsterWorld again and there wasn’t anything telling me how can I stop it. Even “Contact Us” lead to the gmail e-mail that got no response.
Finally with help from my twitter fellows (special thanks to @brenstrong @antgalvin) I found that in Settings > Connections tab you can “Revoke” application access to my account. Thanks god its gone for good! Now I should do the same on facebook as I did accepted some gifts from friend of mine there and it might be spamming my friends
So the bottom line:
Please ignore all DM I sent to you and don’t play this game! You gonna loose all your followers.
If you see anyone else “playing” this game then tell them its not worth it.

Thanks! I had the same problem, and didn’t know what to do. This cleared it up.
I’m happy that my post helped someone. This is indeed nasty way of using twitter.
I got e-mail from Mafia Wars and they deleted my account. I still feel kind of corrupted with this application.
Thanks, now hopefully I won’t be hassled by mobsterworld any more.
Looking by the visitor count on this post, mobsterworld is really troublesome to a lot of people
And the same thing happened here…all of my friends….contacts…I protected so carefully have been bombarded…I am tearing it all down and stapling it back together but the HEADACHE is horrible…
Thank you for the well written blog on my point of view!
The worst thing is that friends don’t suspect what it is when they receive DM from you next day. And so the social worm continues…
The spamming aspect of Twitter is growing all the time and it can degrade the service a lot. Twitter yesterday announced that it was clamping down on spammers so hopfully this practice will also be stamped out soon. As with every unsolicited email, DM’s should also be taken with a hint of doubt.
To be honest when I receive DM, I’m so happy that somebody from 400 followers sent it to me that I take it serious… and I think I’m not the only one.
I remember FOWA had similar problem with Twitter spam. They launched campaign that if 20 friends will re-tweet you then you can get free ticket to event. This went all over twitter and they canceled this campaign.
ahh…. just go to the settings panel in your mobster world account and turn off any or all of the twit notifications, problem solved.
Yep, I did that after someone on twitter suggested it to me. But they don’t have anything suggestion that on their site.
thanks from me too. It’s taken me ages to find out how to get rid of it.
Just made it over via the link you sent me! Wow, I had no idea it got that bad. I just know my DM box is full, full, full of Mafia alerts, invites, etc, etc from all sorts of people (and I peeked, even from you) That explains a bit and now I wonder if other people even realize how many DM’s they are sending out.
Beyond this, I do hope you’re having a fabulous week!
@Rebeccahaswrote
Sorry for spamming you Rebecca. I just hope that DM was a while ago and I’m not spamming anyone any more (there is no way I can check it).
Thank You for this post. It has saved me a lot of headache:)
I have revoked thier access and they dont show in the connections anymore, but now its worse than ever. I dont know what else to do. I am ready to shut down the whole thing. Delete the profile and start over unless there iis someone else tat can suggest something.
Jennifer, there isn’t much more you can do in this case. I actually send them mail to delete my account and they sent back that they did delete it.
You might probably delete all your tweets related to the Mobster world and apologize to everyone you sent direct messages. Why do you think it’s worst now?
It’s not a worm. I was able to contact game owner who told me you have to deselect the option to contact all your Twitter followers. I mentioned to him that it wasn’t obvious and is annoying followers. He has agreed to look at this and make the deselect option very prominent.
It took one day for game owner to reply to me and direct messages were still sent to my followers. It’s not computer worm, but it is social worm as people can’t get rid of it easily.
Hi gita,
I have revoked access and changed my password but it is still trying to access my account. Can you give me the way to contact the game owner and have them delete my account.
Thanks
Kenny
Kenny, I sent you a mail. I hope it works for you.
It answered multiple questions that I had. ,
A Million thanks.
I got rid of this headache.
I only went there to look over the site and without knowingly got caught up in their registration and all my Tweeter follows where dmailed.
Now I have to delete all those dm one be one!!
You are welcom Capri, Gangster – I’m happy that my blog post helped
I thought this was a very insiteful article. I was trying to find a solution to this problem as I have a great amount of followers, and also do business from my page. so it was very annoying for someone else (spam) to have control of my account and make me lose my creditability which I could not have.
thanks for helping me through this problem.
Been looking for this type of information. Everything I’ve read anywhere else hasn’t covered it very well, but your post did. Thanks…
